I Am Always Growing
Renee Aless Martinez was one out of thirteen artists selected to participate in Discovery Green’s Earth Day Mural Program in April of 2021. Out of 110 applications the park received, only 13 designs were selected to celebrate the city of Houston’s diverse and committed culture to making a better world around us. Martinez’s mural is dedicated to the concept of self-growth. Given the difficult year all our communities faced, Martinez wanted to create a still and peaceful reminder that even through hard times are among us, you are “always growing”. Change is inevitable and therefore so is the opportunity for self-growth, self-reflection and resilience.
Black Cat Alley
Black Cat Alley is a selection of street art celebrated in the east side of Milwaukee, WI. Martinez was 1 out of 10 selected artists to participate in the first round of artists meant to transform the space into an artistic experience. Martinez’s mural was made of handprinted intaglio and relief prints wheatpasted together and drawn over with oil markers. The mural was a representation of Martinez’s disconnection to her heritage and home.
